Why convert PDF to Word?
PDFs are built for sharing, not editing. When you need to update a resume, fix a contract, or reuse content from a report, retyping everything wastes time. Converting PDF to Word gives you an editable document in seconds, so you can change what you need and save or export it again.
Convert PDF to editable Word (DOCX) online
Convert PDF to Word and get a .docx file you can open in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Headings, paragraphs, images, and tables carry over so you can start editing instead of retyping.
It is perfect for updating a resume, revising a contract, or reusing content from a report. For scanned PDFs, run OCR first so the text can be recognized.
Quick tips
- Use PDFs created from text documents for the cleanest results.
- Run OCR first if your PDF is a scan.
- Check complex tables after converting.
Getting a clean editable Word file from a PDF
How do I convert a PDF to Word and keep the formatting?
A PDF stores where every line, image and table sits on the page. It does not store paragraphs or styles the way Word does. A converter has to rebuild that structure, so the closer your PDF is to a normal text document, the closer the DOCX will be to the original.
PDFs exported straight from Word, Google Docs or a design tool convert best because their text is real text with a clear reading order. Reports, letters, CVs and contracts usually come through with headings, paragraphs, images and tables in place.
Why does my converted Word file look slightly different?
Fonts are the most common reason. If the PDF uses a font that is not installed on your computer, Word substitutes a similar one and line breaks can shift. Multi-column layouts, text boxes, overlapping graphics and decorative page designs are also harder to rebuild exactly.
Treat the result as a very good first draft. Spend a minute scanning headings, table borders and page breaks, then fix anything that moved. That is still far quicker than retyping the whole document.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to editable Word?
A scan is a photo of a page, so there is no text to carry over. This converter needs a text layer, and OCR for scanned files is available on paid plans. If you are not sure which type you have, try selecting a word in your PDF viewer: if you can highlight it, the file has a text layer.
What should I check before sending the Word file on?
Open the DOCX in Word or Google Docs, turn on the formatting marks if you want to see stray spaces, and run a spell check. Compare numbers in tables with the original, update the document properties, and save a copy under a new name so you always keep the source PDF.
Popular ways to use it
Edit an old CV or resume
Turn the PDF you saved years ago back into a Word document, update your experience, and export a fresh PDF.
Update a contract or agreement
Change names, dates or clauses in a document you only have as a PDF, then send it for review.
Reuse text from a report
Pull sections of a research paper or business report into a new document without copying line by line.
Fix a typo in a flyer or brochure
Convert, correct the mistake, and re-export instead of asking the original designer for the source file.
Translate or proofread a document
Open the DOCX in Word or Google Docs to use track changes, comments and translation tools.
Troubleshooting and common problems
The text in my Word file is out of order or split into odd boxes.
This usually happens with multi-column pages or text boxes. Copy the affected text into a fresh paragraph, or convert only the pages that look right by splitting the PDF first.
The converter says my PDF has no text.
The file is probably a scan or a photo saved as a PDF. It needs OCR first, which is available on paid plans. Try the OCR PDF tool, or sign in to see your plan options.
Fonts changed after conversion.
Install the original font if you have it, or choose a similar font for the whole document using Word styles so everything stays consistent.
My PDF is password protected and will not convert.
Remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first (you will need the correct password), then convert the unlocked copy.
Good to know
- DOCX output
- You get a standard .docx file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages.
- Best source files
- PDFs created from digital documents convert better than printed pages that were scanned.
- Original stays untouched
- Converting makes a new file. Your PDF is not changed, so keep it as a reference copy.
- Large or complex files
- Long documents with many images take a little longer. Splitting a very large PDF into parts can make editing easier.
