How to Extract Pages from a PDF (and Keep the Original Intact)

Sometimes you only need three pages out of a 120-page PDF. This guide shows how to pull out exactly those pages, split a document into several files, and make sure your original stays untouched.

Quick answer: how do I extract pages from a PDF?

  1. 1

    Open a split tool

Upload your PDF to Split PDF on Tools4PDF, or open it in any desktop PDF app that has an extract option.

  2. 2

    Choose the pages

Type a start and end page, or click the page thumbnails you want to keep.

  3. 3

    Export as a new file

Save the result as one PDF. Your original file is not changed, because you download a separate new document.

What does "extract pages" actually mean?

Extracting pages means copying selected pages out of a PDF into a new PDF. The source document keeps all of its pages. People also call this "separating" or "splitting" a PDF, and the words are used loosely. In practice there are two slightly different jobs.

The first is pulling out a selection: you want pages 4 to 6 of a report as their own file. The second is cutting a document into pieces: you want chapters one to five each saved as separate files. Both start from the same idea, picking page numbers, and differ only in how many output files you end up with.

How do I split a PDF by page range or by selected pages?

Our Split PDF tool supports both approaches. You can enter a start and end page for a continuous run of pages, or you can click individual page previews to select pages that are not next to each other. If you select pages by hand, that selection takes priority over the range boxes.

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drag the file into the page or browse for it. Files up to 50 MB are supported. A password-protected PDF has to be unlocked first.

  2. 2

    Pick what to keep

Set the start and end page, or tick the pages you want from the previews. Runs of consecutive pages are grouped into ranges automatically.

  3. 3

    Choose the output style

Select "as Single PDF" to get one file with all chosen pages, or "as Separate PDFs" to get a ZIP containing one PDF per range.

  4. 4

    Download and check

Save the result, open it, and confirm the pages are in the order you expect before you send it anywhere.

Pages are separated without being recompressed, so text, images and layout in the extracted file match the original. Files are processed securely and deleted automatically after processing.

Extract pages or delete pages: which should I use?

The two actions give the same result from different directions. If you want to keep a small part of a large file, extracting is quicker: name the few pages you need. If you want to keep most of a file and drop a few pages, such as a blank page or a cover sheet, deleting is quicker: name the few pages you do not need.

A simple rule is to choose whichever list is shorter. For the delete direction, use our Delete PDF Pages tool, which works the same way but removes the pages you pick and saves what remains. If you also need to change the order of the remaining pages, Organize PDF lets you drag them into place.

How do I keep my original PDF safe?

Extraction in an online tool produces a new download, so the original on your device is not overwritten. Even so, a few habits make accidents unlikely:

  • Keep the original in its folder and save the extract under a clear name, such as "contract-pages-4-6".
  • Avoid desktop options that say "delete pages after extracting" unless you really want the source changed.
  • Work on a copy if the original is the only version of an important document.
  • Open the new file before you delete or overwrite anything else.

Why did extracting pages not work, or look wrong?

Most problems fall into a few groups. A password-protected file must be unlocked before it can be split. A file over the size limit may need to be compressed first. Scanned documents extract fine, but the page numbers printed on the paper may not match the PDF page numbers, so count the thumbnails rather than the printed numbers.

Also be aware that some documents are digitally signed or certified. Pulling pages out of such a document creates a new file, and the signature will usually not carry over to it. If the signature matters, keep the full original as your record and use the extract only as a convenience copy.

What are common reasons to extract pages from a PDF?

Extraction is useful far beyond tidying files. A few situations come up again and again, and each suggests a slightly different way of working.

When a form, application or upload portal asks for one specific page, such as an ID page or a signed last page, extracting that page avoids sending an entire document with information the recipient does not need. When a long report is shared with several teams, you can give each team only its own chapter as a separate file. Students often pull out the reading for one week rather than carrying a whole textbook scan, and anyone sharing a contract can send just the clauses under discussion.

Extracting is also a practical way around file size limits. If a 60 MB scan will not attach to an email, splitting it into two or three parts may get each piece under the limit, and you can also try Compress PDF on the result. Whatever the reason, think about privacy: the pages you leave out are no longer in the file you send, but only if you send the new extract and not the original.

Frequently asked questions

Does extracting pages change my original PDF?

No. Extracting creates a new file with the pages you selected, and your original stays as it was on your device.

Can I extract pages that are not next to each other?

Yes. Click the individual page previews in Split PDF to select any combination, such as pages 2, 7 and 15.

What is the difference between extracting and deleting pages?

Extracting keeps only the pages you choose. Deleting removes the pages you choose and keeps the rest. Pick whichever means naming fewer pages.

Will the quality drop when I split a PDF?

No. Pages are separated without recompression, so the content in the new file stays the same as in the original.

Can I get each range as its own file?

Yes. Choose "as Separate PDFs" and you receive a ZIP with one PDF for each range.

Can I extract pages from a password-protected PDF?

Unlock it first with the PDF Unlock tool, which needs the password, then split the unlocked copy.
