Quick answer: how do I sign a PDF without printing?

  1. 1

Open the PDF in a signing tool

Upload it to Sign PDF, or use a PDF app on your computer or phone.

  2. 2

    Create your signature

Draw it with a mouse or finger, type your name in a script style, or upload an image of your handwritten signature.

  3. 3

    Place it and download

Drag the signature onto the signature line, resize it, then save the signed PDF and send it.

How do I sign a PDF on my computer?

Sign PDF on Tools4PDF opens the document in the same editor we use for editing, with a Sign option in the toolbar. It offers three ways to create the signature: Draw, Type and Upload. Whichever you choose, the result is saved as a transparent image that you can place on the page.

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF

Drag it into the page or browse for it. The document opens with its pages visible.

  2. 2

    Choose Draw, Type or Upload

In the Sign menu pick how you want to create the signature. Drawing works with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen. Typing offers three styles: a script look, a formal serif and a plain sans-serif. Uploading accepts an image of a signature you have already signed on paper.

  3. 3

    Add the signature

Confirm it and a draggable signature appears. If the pad is empty, you will be asked to draw first.

  4. 4

    Position and resize

Drag it to the signature line on the correct page and adjust the size so it sits neatly on the line without covering text.

  5. 5

    Add the date if needed

Use the text tool to type a date or your printed name next to the signature.

  6. 6

    Download the signed PDF

Save the file, then open it once to check that the signature is where it should be.

The signature is saved into the PDF as an image. If a form field is meant to hold your signature, check whether the recipient wants a particular placement.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. In a mobile browser the Draw option lets you sign with your finger. Rotate the phone sideways if you want a larger pad, which tends to give a smoother, more natural-looking line. Typing your name is the easiest option on a small screen, while uploading works well if you keep a clean photo of your signature on white paper.

Whichever route you pick, zoom in before placing the signature so it lands exactly on the line, and zoom out to check the whole page before downloading.

What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?

These terms are often mixed up. An electronic signature is a broad idea: any mark or action that shows you agree to a document, such as a typed name, a drawn signature or an image of your handwriting. A digital signature is a specific, certificate-based technique that uses cryptography to tie a signature to an identity and to reveal whether the file was changed after signing.

Our Sign PDF tool places a visible signature on the page. It does not create a certificate-based digital signature, and it does not verify who is signing. For many everyday documents, such as permission slips, internal forms or simple agreements, a visible signature is exactly what the other party asks for. For others, it is not enough.

Will my signed PDF be accepted?

Whether a signature is accepted depends on the document, the organisation asking for it, and the rules where you live. We cannot tell you that a particular contract, court filing or government form will accept an image-based signature, and nothing here is legal advice.

Before you sign, it helps to check a few things:

  • Ask the recipient whether a drawn, typed or image signature is acceptable, or whether they require a certificate-based digital signature or a signing platform.
  • Check the instructions on the form itself, since some require a wet-ink original or a witness.
  • For high-value, regulated or cross-border agreements, consider asking a qualified professional which kind of signature is needed.
  • Keep a copy of the final signed file and the email in which you sent it.

How can I protect a signed PDF afterwards?

An image on a page can be edited like any other page content if the file is not locked down. If you want to reduce accidental changes, you can flatten form fields so they stop being editable, or add a password with the Lock PDF tool before sending. Neither of these makes the signature a certified digital signature, but they can help the file arrive in the form you intended.

Keep your signature image private. Anyone who obtains a clean copy of it could paste it into another document, so avoid posting it publicly or leaving it in shared folders.

What makes a signature look professional?

A few small choices make a signed PDF look careful rather than rushed. Draw on a larger pad and let the strokes be natural, because a signature squeezed into a tiny box often looks cramped when it is scaled down. If you upload an image, use a signature written in dark ink on plain white paper, photographed in even light, so the edges are clean.

Size matters too. Make the signature roughly the height of the line it sits on, and keep it clear of printed text and form borders. Place it on every page that requires one, such as initials on each page of an agreement, and read the signed file from start to finish before sending. If your name is typed instead, choose the style that most resembles how you normally sign, or the plain style if the recipient simply wants a clear name.

Frequently asked questions

Is signing a PDF with Tools4PDF free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no watermark and no signup.

What ways can I create my signature?

You can draw it, type your name in one of three styles, or upload an image of your signature.

Is this a legally binding digital signature?

It places a visible signature on the page and is not a certificate-based digital signature. Acceptance depends on the document and the rules that apply, so check with the recipient.

Can I add the date next to my signature?

Yes. Use the text tool in the editor to type the date or your printed name beside the signature.

Can I sign on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open the tool in your mobile browser and draw with your finger, type your name, or upload an image.

Where is my signature stored?

It is added to the PDF as an image. Sign PDF runs in your browser, so the file stays on your device while you sign.
