Quick answer: how do I fix a PDF that will not open?

  1. 1

    Rule out the viewer

Try the file in another PDF reader or a different browser, and on another device if you can.

  2. 2

    Get a fresh copy

Download the file again or ask the sender to resend it. Incomplete downloads are a common cause.

  3. 3

    Run a repair

Upload it to Repair PDF, which rebuilds the file structure and keeps the pages it can read, then open the new copy.

Why does a PDF become damaged or corrupted?

A PDF stores its pages along with an index that tells a viewer where everything is. If part of that structure is missing or wrong, a viewer may refuse to open the file even though much of the content is still inside it. Typical causes include:

  • A download or transfer that was cut off, so the end of the file never arrived.
  • A save interrupted by a crash, a power cut or a full disk.
  • Email or cloud sync problems that truncate attachments.
  • Buggy software that wrote a file with structural errors.
  • Storage problems on an old USB stick or drive.
  • Malware, in rare cases, which is why an unexpected failure on a file from an unknown sender deserves caution.

If the file came from someone you do not know and behaves strangely, do not keep trying to open it. Scan it or delete it.

What quick checks should I try before repairing?

Repair is not always necessary. A few minutes of checking can save effort, and it also tells you whether the problem is the file or the software.

  • Open the PDF in a different app, such as another reader or a web browser. If it opens there, the file is fine and your first viewer is the problem.
  • Check the file size. A file that is zero bytes or far smaller than expected was almost certainly cut short, so re-download or ask for a resend.
  • Look at the file extension. A file ending in something other than .pdf, or one renamed by mistake, may not be a PDF at all.
  • See whether it needs a password. Protected files can show confusing errors in some viewers; unlock it with the right password using PDF Unlock.
  • Copy it to a different folder or drive in case the original storage location is failing.
  • Look for an earlier copy in your email, downloads, backups or cloud version history.

How do I repair a PDF online?

Repair PDF reads whatever is still intact in your file, rebuilds the structure that tells a viewer where the pages are, and writes a clean new PDF. It runs in your browser, so the file stays on your device while it works.

  1. 1

    Upload the damaged PDF

Drag the file in or browse for it.

  2. 2

    Let the tool rebuild it

It repairs broken cross-reference tables and trailing data where possible and keeps the pages it can read.

  3. 3

    Check the page count

You are shown how many pages were recovered. Compare that number with what you expected.

  4. 4

    Download and open the result

Save the repaired copy and open it in your usual viewer. Keep the damaged original until you are sure the repaired file has everything you need.

What can repair recover, and what can it not?

Repair works best when the damage is to the structure rather than to the content. If the index at the end of the file is missing or garbled but the page data is still there, there is a good chance of getting the document back.

It cannot invent content that is gone. If the page data itself is destroyed, those pages cannot be recovered, and a repaired file may be missing images, fonts or pages that were damaged. If the tool finds no readable pages, it will say so rather than hand you an empty file. Password-protected files must be unlocked before repair, and a file that is not really a PDF cannot be turned into one.

Treat the result as a rescue copy: check every page that matters, and compare against the original source if you still have one.

How can I stop PDFs from getting damaged?

A few habits make corrupted files much less likely:

  • Wait for downloads to finish completely before opening or moving a file.
  • Safely eject USB drives and close the PDF app before copying a file that is still open.
  • Keep spare disk space free so saves do not fail halfway.
  • Save important documents in two places, for example your device and a cloud folder.
  • Keep your PDF software updated, and be careful with tools that edit a file repeatedly in place.
  • Send large files through a link rather than an attachment if your email provider tends to truncate them.

What if repair does not work?

If the repaired file still will not open, or the page count is far lower than expected, the damage probably reaches the page data itself. At that point the best route is to find another copy of the document rather than keep trying tools on the same broken file.

Check the place the file originally came from: the email attachment, the download page, a cloud storage version history, a backup, or the person who sent it. If the PDF was created from another document, such as a spreadsheet or a word processor file, export it again from the source. If you only need the words and the file opens partly, tools such as PDF to Text can pull out whatever text is readable. Keep the damaged original until you have a good replacement, since a different tool may succeed where another did not.

Frequently asked questions

Can every corrupted PDF be repaired?

No. If the page data itself is destroyed it cannot be recovered. The tool tells you when no readable pages are found.

Is my PDF uploaded when I repair it?

No. Repair PDF runs in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.

Will the repaired PDF look identical to the original?

Recovered pages keep their content, but any parts that were damaged may be missing. Check the pages that matter.

Why does my PDF open in one app but not another?

Strict viewers reject files with structural problems that forgiving ones tolerate. Repair writes a clean structure that most viewers accept.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

Unlock the PDF first with the password, then run the repair.

My PDF is blank after opening. Is that damage?

It can be. Try another viewer first, then repair. If pages stay blank, the page data may be missing and you may need a fresh copy.
