How to Rotate a PDF and Save It Permanently | Tools4PDF
Sideways scan? Upside-down page? Learn how to rotate one page or a whole PDF online and save the new orientation for good, with no software to install.
How to Rotate a PDF and Save It Permanently
You open a PDF and the first page is lying on its side. Or a scanned contract has three pages upside down in the middle. You can tilt your head, or you can fix the file.
This guide shows you how to rotate a PDF online, how to rotate only the pages that are wrong, and why a rotation you make in a viewer often "disappears" the moment someone else opens the file. Everything here can be done in your browser with the free Rotate PDF Pages tool.
Why PDF pages end up sideways in the first place
Most wrongly oriented pages come from a few everyday situations:
- Scanner feeds. Paper goes into the feeder the wrong way round, so a few pages come out upside down.
- Phone photos. A photo taken in landscape becomes a landscape page, even when the document is portrait.
- Mixed reports. A report assembled from a portrait memo and a landscape spreadsheet has pages facing different ways.
- Landscape scans saved as portrait. The text is readable only if you turn your head 90 degrees.
If you only have a handful of photos, you can also turn them into a PDF first with JPG to PDF or HEIC to PDF, then rotate whatever came out sideways.
Rotating in a viewer vs. rotating the file
This is the part that trips people up. Most PDF viewers have a "rotate view" button. It turns the page on your screen, but it usually doesn't change the file. Close it, send it to a colleague, and the page opens sideways again.

How to rotate a PDF online, step by step
- Open the tool. Go to Rotate PDF Pages.
- Upload your PDF. Drag the file in, or browse for it on your device. The tool works with PDF files.
- Rotate the pages. Use the rotate buttons on each page thumbnail. Turn a page 90°, 180° or 270°. If you want to rotate everything, use the buttons with no pages selected and every page turns at once.
- Check the thumbnails. Scroll through before you save, especially with scans. A batch often has a few pages that went in differently from the rest.
- Download the new PDF. The corrected file opens in the right orientation in any viewer.
Your original file isn't touched. You download a new copy, so if you rotate the wrong page you can simply start over.

Rotate 90° |
A quick trick: look at where the first line of text is. Whatever direction it faces, turn the page until that line is at the top and reads left to right.
Rotate only the pages that are wrong
You don't have to rotate the whole file. If page 7 of a 40-page report is sideways, turn page 7 and leave the rest alone. This matters for mixed documents, such as a portrait contract with a landscape pricing table, where rotating everything would break the pages that were already correct.
If you also need to change the order of pages, or remove a few while you're at it, use Organize PDF. It lets you rotate, reorder, duplicate and delete pages from one page grid. For simply removing pages, Delete PDF Pages is faster.
Fixing a scanned PDF
Scans are the number one reason people search for how to rotate a PDF, so here is a clean routine:
- Rotate the wrong pages first. Fix orientation before anything else.
- Trim the edges if needed. Scanner margins and shadows can be cropped off with Crop PDF.
- Make the text searchable. If you plan to copy text out of the scan, run it through OCR PDF. Fixing the orientation first helps text recognition work better. Note that OCR may require signing in or a paid plan.
- Shrink it for sharing. Scans can be large, so Compress PDF brings the size down for email and uploads.
If you're scanning with your phone camera, Scan to PDF lets you capture paper documents straight into a PDF.
Rotate first, then add page numbers
Order matters. If you add page numbers and then rotate, the numbers rotate with the page and can end up in the wrong corner. Rotate every page into its final orientation first, then add numbers with Add Page Numbers. Some tools on the site need you to sign in or upgrade, and this is one of them, so check the tool page for what applies to your plan.
Straighten pages before you sign, print or send
A few moments with the rotate tool saves a lot of awkwardness later:
- Before signing. Make sure the signature goes on the correct side of the page. Then use Sign PDF to add it.
- Before printing. Pages that look right on screen can still print sideways if the orientation was only a view setting. Rotate and save first.
- Before merging. If you're joining files with Merge PDF, fix the orientation of each one first, so the combined document is consistent.
- Before splitting. If you need to pull a few pages out of a long file with Split PDF, rotate the pages first so every extracted file already opens the right way up.
- Before sending. A document that opens correctly on your phone, on a laptop and on a printer makes a better impression than one that needs a head tilt.

Does rotating hurt quality?
No. Rotation changes how a page is displayed, not what is on it. Text and images are not re-created or recompressed, so the page looks exactly as it did, just turned. That is also why it is quick, even for scan-heavy files.
Do you need Adobe Acrobat?
No. The tool runs in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, so there is nothing to install. File size limits depend on your plan and are shown on the upload screen.
