Bold Text Missing in PDF? How to Fix It (Free)
Bold text vanished after exporting Word or Google Docs to PDF? Learn why it happens, how to prevent it, and how to fix it free on Tools4PDF.
Bold text usually goes missing because the font has no real bold weight, is not embedded in the file, or gets swapped for another font during export. Your document looks perfect on screen, then the PDF opens with headings and key terms in regular weight. The same problem can hit in reverse when you convert a PDF back into a Word file or a Google Doc.
This guide covers both directions. You can fix the source file, repair the PDF directly with Edit PDF on Tools4PDF, or convert the PDF again with PDF to Word and restore the formatting there.
Why bold text disappears
|
Cause |
What happens |
Fix |
|
Faux bold |
The editor fakes bold by thickening a regular font, and the effect is lost on export |
Switch to a font family with a true bold weight |
|
Font not embedded |
The PDF viewer substitutes another font that lacks bold |
Embed fonts when exporting |
|
Font substitution |
Your system swaps a custom font for a similar one without a bold variant |
Use a common font or install the full family |
|
Damaged font install |
A missing or corrupt bold file on your device |
Reinstall the complete font family |
|
Viewer rendering |
One PDF reader draws the weight wrongly |
Check the file in a second viewer and print preview |
Fix it at the source: Word and Google Docs
If you still have the original document, correct the problem there and export again. Menu names vary a little between versions.
In Microsoft Word
- Select the bold text, press Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on Mac) twice, and see whether the weight really changes. If it barely moves, the font has no true bold.
- Change the font to a family with real bold weights, such as Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri.
- Go to File > Options > Save and tick "Embed fonts in the file".
- Export with File > Save As > PDF instead of printing to a PDF printer, which keeps more of the formatting.
In Google Docs
- Switch custom fonts to widely supported ones such as Roboto, Open Sans or Lato.
- Download with File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf).
- If bold is still weak, try another browser or clear the cache, then export again.
- As a fallback, use File > Print and choose Save as PDF.
After exporting, open the PDF in your browser and check the print preview. Bold text that looks faint there will print faint too.
Fix it directly in the PDF
When the document is final, or you no longer have the original, repair the PDF itself. Edit PDF on Tools4PDF runs in your browser, is free to use with no signup, and adds text, images, shapes and highlights without a watermark.
- Open Edit PDF and upload your PDF.
- Add a text box over the word or heading that lost its weight, and type the same wording.
- Pick a bold option or a font family with a true bold style if the editor offers one, then match the size and position to the surrounding text.
- Remove or cover the faded original so the page does not show two versions.
- Save and download, then open the result and check the print preview.
If you cannot match the weight, a highlight or a shape behind the text still makes key terms stand out.
Before you edit
- A restricted PDF may need Unlock PDF first, only if you have permission (a signed-in or paid feature).
- A scanned PDF has no real text to restyle. Run it through OCR PDF first (a paid-plan feature), then edit.
When bold is lost converting a PDF to Word or Google Docs
A PDF stores shapes and font names, not editing styles, so a converter has to guess what was bold. If a font is embedded under an unusual name or as a partial subset, that guess can fail and the text comes back in regular weight.
- Upload the PDF to PDF to Word. It is free with no watermark and no signup, and the free plan accepts files up to 15 MB.
- Download the DOCX and open it in Word, or upload it to Google Drive and open it in Google Docs.
- Select the affected text and press Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on Mac) to restore the weight.
- Scan the result for other differences. Complex designs may need small manual adjustments after conversion.
|
Symptom |
Likely cause |
Try |
|
Headings come back in regular weight |
Bold inferred from the font name failed |
Reapply bold in the DOCX |
|
Nothing is selectable in the PDF |
It is a scan, so there is no real text |
OCR PDF, then convert |
|
Layout shifts but text is right |
Complex design or tables |
Adjust spacing manually after converting |
|
Conversion is blocked |
The file is over your plan's size limit |
Compress PDF first |
To go the other way, turn the fixed document back into a clean PDF with Word to PDF.
How to stop it happening again
- Use fonts with real bold weights. Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, Roboto and Open Sans are safe choices.
- Embed fonts on export and choose Save as PDF rather than Print to PDF.
- Install complete font families, both regular and bold files, if you use custom fonts.
- Test before sending. Open the PDF in your browser and check the print preview.
- Keep the order right. Fix text first, then Compress PDF for email, and add a password with Protect PDF last, since protected files must be unlocked before other tools can work on them.
- Combine after fixing. Once each file looks right, join them with Merge PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does bold text disappear when I
save Word or Google Docs as a PDF?
Usually the font has no true bold weight,
is not embedded, or is replaced during export. Bold that is only simulated on
screen does not carry into the PDF.
Why is bold fine on screen but weak when printed?
The viewer or printer driver may be substituting the font. Embedding fonts
and checking the print preview usually exposes it.
Can I fix missing bold without re-exporting?
Yes. Open the PDF in Edit PDF, re-add the text in a bolder font and save a new copy.
Does this affect scanned PDFs?
Yes. A scan contains images, not text, so it needs OCR before you can restyle
anything. OCR is part of the paid plans.
Why did bold vanish when I converted a PDF to Word?
The converter infers bold from the PDF's font data, and that can fail. Reapply
bold in the DOCX, which you can open in Word or Google Docs.
Is Tools4PDF free?
Yes. The free plan covers basic tools with up to 25 tasks a day and files up to
15 MB. Paid plans raise those limits.
