Method 1: Merge Inside Word With Text from File

Use this when you are offline or already working in Word. It works best when every file uses the same template, because Word applies the main document's styles to everything you insert.

On Windows

Open the Word file that should come first.

Click where the next document should start.

Go to Insert, then Object, then Text from File.

Select the files and click Insert. Hold Ctrl to pick several at once.

On Mac

Open the first document and place your cursor where the next one goes.

Go to Insert, then Text, then From File.

Select the files and insert them.

Word inserts files in the order the file picker lists them, so name them 01_Intro.docx,

02_Chapter-One.docx and so on before you start. If the files hold tracked changes from different reviewers, accept or reject the edits first, or use Review, Compare, Combine to merge two versions of the same document.

Method 2: Convert to PDF, Then Merge Online

A PDF locks the layout of each file, so fonts, tables, headers and page breaks stay as they were. That makes it the safer route when your Word files use different styles or margins.

Convert each file. Upload every document to Word to PDF and download the PDFs. The free plan handles one file per batch, while the Standard plan takes 10 at once.

Open Merge PDF. Go to Merge PDF and add the converted files.

Set the order. Arrange the files the way you want them to read.

Merge and download. Combine them into one PDF and save it.

Need the result back as an editable file? Run the merged PDF through PDF to Word. Expect to tidy a few styles afterwards, since the conversion rebuilds the document from the PDF.

Use the same file-naming habit here: a clear 01, 02, 03 prefix makes it easy to spot the right order. Plan details are on the pricing page.

What to Do With the Merged File

A merged document is usually a contract pack, a multi-chapter report or a school handout, so a few finishing steps help.

Edit PDF adds text, shapes and comments to the combined file

Lock PDF puts a password on it before you send it. Use Unlock PDF to remove one from a file you own.

OCR PDF makes any scanned pages in the pack searchable. Compress PDFshrinks it for email and uploads.

If the pack includes photos or screenshots, turn them into pages first with JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF, then merge everything in one go.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between merging and combining?

Merging joins complete documents in a set order. Combining can also mean inserting a section, table or chapter from one file into another.

Will I lose formatting when I merge Word files?

Sometimes. Word applies the main document's styles to inserted text, so mixed templates can shift. Merging through PDF avoids most of that.

When should I not merge Word files?

Skip it when you need live links to source files, when several people edit separate files at once, or when the document relies on master documents.

Can I merge Word files on my phone?

Yes. Word to PDF and Merge PDF run in any modern mobile browser.

Is it free?
The free plan includes 25 tasks a day and files up to 15 MB. Larger limits are listed on the pricing page.
